Best Actress- Comedy or Musical
Julianne Moore for The Kids are All Right
Everyone keeps talking about how great Annette Bening was in The Kids are All Right. I agree, Annette Bening was wonderful. In fact, every performance in that film was spectacular. However, the woman who shined brightest for me was Julianne Moore. She showed what range she has and played her role incredibly well. I also feel Annette Bening is getting more press because everyone feels badly that Hillary Swank keeps beating her out in the Oscars. We need to move past that...both Annette Bening and Julianne Moore are outstanding actresses that have not been given their due by the Academy.
Best Actor- Comedy or Musical
Johnny Depp for Alice in Wonderland
To be honest, I don't think Depp's performance in this film deserves an award. I have felt, for a while, that he is continuously being nominated in recent years because awards shows are apologizing for their lack of recognition when he did some of his best work in the 90's (you can argue with my all you want, but Depp has been nominated for an Oscar for Pirates of the Caribbean, Finding Neverland, and Sweeney Todd. While I agree that Captain Jack and Sweeney Todd were marvelous characters, they aren't the type awards usually recognize. J.M. Barry was also not as good of a character creation as Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, or Donnie Brasco, all of which are characters he SHOULD have been nominated for, ESPECIALLY Donnie Brasco.). However, the only other films that are nominated that I've seen are Love and Other Drugs, where Jake Gyllenhaal gave a decent performance, but overall was meh, and The Tourist, which is Depp again, and his Mad Hatter was better. I'm not opposed to giving it to Kevin Spacey or Paul Giamatti, but since I have not seen these films, I cannot adequately vote on them. So my conclusion is that Johnny Depp needs to do what he does best and try out something different with a spectacular script (something he's seriously been lacking recently) so that he can win an award and I will cheer and say, "Finally, Depp has had his day!" Stop making up for past mistakes with mediocre nominations, award shows...
1. I love the rant.
ReplyDelete2. I'm in total agreement on Julianne Moore.
3. I feel like Depp shouldn't win since his performance in Alice was just meh, but I don't know who else I would want to win. Maybe Kevin Spacey because he's awesome.
