Best Actress- Drama. I feel like I shouldn’t even cast a vote for this award because I have seen zero of the movies from which the actresses are nominated. So, I will base my votes strictly on past performance. I am doubtful enough of Portman’s abilities that I’ll cross her off right away. I’ve seen Kidman do some good work (The Hours) but I’ve also seen her not be so impressive, so she’s a no go. I hear great things about both Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone and Halle Berry in Frankie and Alice. But, when it comes down to it, I’m going to vote for Michelle Williams and I’ll tell you why: just because I like her.
Best Actor-Drama. This decision is much harder because I really like 4 out of 5 of the actors nominated. I don’t know Jesse Eisenberg and didn’t see The Social Network so he’s right out. I’m afraid I have to cross Mark Wahlberg off because I saw The Fighter and his performance didn’t stand out to me. While I love Colin Firth, I can’t ever see him as anyone other than Mr. Darcy, so I can’t vote for him this time. I did not see Blue Valentine, but I’m absolutely in love with Ryan Gosling… which is why it kinda pains me to say I’d give this one to James Franco. It’s hard enough to characterize a real person, but to characterize a real person whilst stationery with your arm under a rock and somehow keep us completely riveted? Well done, James Franco. Well done.
