A while ago, I wrote about five films I wished I hadn't seen. It was a fun post for me, because I love ranting about movies. Well, since this is actors' month, I figured I should write about five overrated actors. If you're wondering how I decide if an actor is overrated, this particular list only contains Academy Award winners...Academy Award winners that I don't think should even be acting. It's important to note that of the four actors we've covered so far, only one of them has won an Oscar and another one has never even been nominated. I already have another actor slated for this week and he, too, has yet to win a much deserved Oscar. Therefore, I think this rant is necessary because I simply do not understand the workings of the Academy. So, without further ado, five overrated actors:
1. Julia Roberts
Seriously? I don't understand her or why she's famous. Yes, she was fine in Pretty Woman and everything, but other than that, I feel like she's cardboard...famous cardboard. And she's completely annoying. Please, stop seeing her movies so she'll stop being cast...
2. Robert De Niro
This year he was given one of those special awards at the Golden Globes. Naturally, they showed a montage of what was supposed to be his greatest roles. I was bored and underwhelmed. Not only that, but when they showed a clip from This Boy's Life, he was out-acted by Leonardo DiCaprio. I was never very bitter about De Niro until I saw The Godfather: Part II and realized he was supposed to be a young Marlon Brando...let this be a lesson to you.
3. John Wayne
I take back what I said about Roberts being cardboard...I forgot about John Wayne for second and Roberts is nowhere near his amount of cardboard. Why was he famous? Was it just because he looked good? It can't be, because he won an Oscar...I mean, I hate Westerns, but I hate them less when people actually ACT in them. Quite a concept, right?
4. Gwenyth Paltrow
I have yet to see her do anything where I've believed she is the character she's playing and didn't feel as though she was being pretentious. I don't understand what the big deal is with her as well.
5. Nicholas Cage
Of course, of course. He's TERRIBLE. He's utterly annoying and I want to punch him in the face all the time. The only good thing he did was introduce Johnny Depp to acting (an actor that will be discussed later this week).
Im not a big Julia fan either, but she can act. Deniro i'd have to disagree on, I think he's a fantastic actor that has gone downhill in recent years. I haven't seen many Wayne movies so I couldn't comment but I know my older family are big fans and there all Western music and cowboy movie fans, so I think theres a link there. Paltrow is preet plain in anything I've seen her in, but I haven't seen much off her stuff. Cage I think get's alot of underdeserving hate because he picks heaps of dogy roles. But he is in some wicked movies, recently Kick-Ass and Bad Litenaut, also wicked films like Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas.
ReplyDeleteWell I can agree with you on Roberts, Wayne and Paltrow.
ReplyDeleteBut De Niro is my favourite actor of all time (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Heat etc), and Nic Cage is one of the best actors of his generation, far better than Depp, Pitt or Clooney...
Still I can understand how you can dislike him, many do, but I think you should see his work in Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas (for which he won an Oscar), Brining Out The Dead, Matchstick Men, Wild At Heart, Raising Arizona and many more.
Of course I respect your opinions, but I suppose we'll just have to disagree on this one...
I figure I will get a lot of disagreements about De Niro. I know I'm in the minority when it comes to him. As I said, I never really had a bone to pick until The Godfather Part II. I'm a major Brando fan, and I feel he did not play him the best he could. I wasn't disappointed with him in Taxi Driver or Raging Bull, but I don't really like either of those films even though I know I'm supposed to. I'm just not a fan.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Cage goes, I will hold hate for him until the day I die. He is actually the only one on this list that I haven't seen his Academy Award winning role, so I'll let that go, however I have never seen him in anything where I thought he could act. I have liked films he's been in (Kick Ass, Matchstick Men, and Adaptation), but never him and I thought he was terrible in all of them.
Jack, I won't argue with you on Pitt or Clooney, since I'm not a big fan of either of them, but Cage is DEFINITELY not better than Depp. I understand we may disagree on this one, but later this week I'll be writing on several Depp films I think everyone will see. I will agree to try Wild at Heart, Raising Arizona, Leaving Las Vegas, and Bringing Out the Dead if you will agree to try out the Depp films I discuss in that post. I truly believe Depp is the best actor of his generation...
I actually thought De Niro was better than Brando, but not many will agree with me there I suppose...
ReplyDeleteAnd as for Cage, well it seems is a personal thing, I like watchign him in whatever and you obviously can't stand him, so we'll just have to agree to disagree...
I look forward to reading your post on Depp.
My vote to add to the list: Kirsten Dunst. She can't act, plus she has a very annoying voice.
ReplyDeleteI can't agree about DeNiro, he's actually one of my favorite actors. I agree about Paltrow and Roberts, they're nowhere NEAR as good as some other actors of today's film. I disagree about John Wayne, but I DEFINETLEY agree about Nicholas Cage.
ReplyDeleteMeh. Julia Roberts isn't an amazing actress or anything, but to me, there is something almost endearing about her big smile and loud laugh. I'll take her over, say, Selma Hayek any day.
