Men and Women in The Town

By Lizzi

While I agree with my sister that The Town is a great film, I'd like to address the relationship of men and women that she mentioned. While the women are victimized, and are "minor" characters, this relationship is not as cut and dry as stated.

To begin with, the film's main character is Doug MacRay (Affleck) and, to an extent, Adam Frawley (Jon Hamm), the FBI agent looking into these bank robberies. The only time we see the other characters is through their interaction with one of these men. Therefore, all the female characters are portrayed somewhat in how these characters see them. An example being Krista, whom we see as a screw up and sexually available because that is how MacRay and Frawley see her.

Claire is indeed victimized at the beginning, however I would argue that she does not fight back because her life and the lives of the customers and workers at the bank are threatened. Also, I believed it was a beautiful portrayal of her strength that she was willing to be vulnerable with someone after such a victimization took place. She stood up and moved on with her life.

Let us keep in mind that movies surrounding men are necessary. It would seem out of place for a female to be a member of Fight Club or a woman to be in the prison in The Shawshank Redemption. Stories take all shapes and forms and I never once thought of The Town as making definite male-female roles.
