Manic Monday Movie: Legally Blonde

When you’re a single woman on Valentine’s Day, it can be hard to find a movie to watch that doesn’t make you feel lonely and depressed. I put forth Legally Blonde. It is a great girl power movie. True, Elle is a total valley girl which is not something we all want to emulate. And she makes the life-changing decision to go to law school for the sole purpose of winning back her boyfriend. And, yes, she falls in love with someone else during the journey so there’s still romance in the movie. But the beauty of it is, she stays true to who she is and learns more about herself along the way.

Even though her California ways are completely unconventional on the east coast, she doesn’t ditch them in order to fit in. She knows who she is and isn’t going to pretend to be someone else just to satisfy those around her. She is self-confident enough to call a guy she barely knows a “butthead,” to teach an entire salon the “bend and snap,” and to stand alone against an intimidating group of Harvard law students.

And in the end, it is her uniqueness that helps her win the case. She uses her knowledge of fashion and hair care to see what none of the other lawyers noticed and discover the guilty party. And she gets to give Warner a piece of her mind after her big win and tell him that she is far too good for him which we’ve all known since the beginning of the movie.

As someone who has her own set of quirks, Legally Blonde inspires me to embrace those and celebrate who I am. And that is why it’s perfect for single women on Valentine’s Day. You don’t need another person to validate your personality or tell you who you are. You can have that strong sense of self that Elle demonstrates - just BE YOU!
